Chapter Number: 18 Brief Description of the Plot:
In chapter 18, Jurgis is still in the Bridwell. He has to spend three extra days there because he cannot pay for his trial. Jurgis leaves prison without knowing exactly where to go. He asks for directions from a boy he meets, but the directions he receives are incorrect. In the end, it takes him hours to reach Packingtown. Jurgis arrives in Packingtown only to find that his house is now owned by someone else. His family could not pay the rent and they were kicked out by Grandmother Majauszkiene. Jurgis is deeply saddened by this news. He finds his family staying with Aniele Jukniene, and soon sees Ona, who has gone into labor prematurely. Jurgis needs a doctor, but he does not have enough money to get one. Aniele and the other women in the room give Jurgis money. The entire sum comes to a dollar and twenty five cents. After obtaining the money, Jurgis sets out to get a midwife for Ona.
